What is silk?Silk is a natural protein fibre spun from the filaments around the pupae of the silk moth. A silk cocoon consists of a single thread of raw silk that can be several kilometres long. Silk is as strong as steel, making it the strongest fibre in the world. The butterfly caterpillar spins a cocoon of silk to shield itself from cold, moisture, and insects as it transforms from a tiny, vulnerable caterpillar into a fully-grown silk butterfly. Silk comprises two primary proteins: sericin and fibroin. What is sericin?Sericin is the protein that surrounds the silk fibres (fibroin), making them stick together when the caterpillar spins them into a cocoon. Sericin also has anti-bacterial properties, shielding the silkworm from bacteria and other threats. What is fibroin?Fibroin is the silk fibre itself. Fibroin is used in silk yarn, silk fabric, and silk filling for silk duvets and pillows. Fibroin is also insulating and moisture-absorbent.What does it mean that sericin is anti-bacterial?It means that sericin has the natural ability to kill and inhibit bacterial growth. Common bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus are actively reduced in the presence of sericin. Is sericin also effective against dust mites?Yes, sericin is also effective against dust mites. According to laboratory tests conducted by Airmid Health Group Ltd. on behalf of Nordic Comfort®, sericin-treated SilkFX® fibres showed a 58% reduction in live dust mites after just eight weeks compared to goose down. By the end of the test, goose down had double the amount (134%) of dust mites, making it a less suitable choice for people with dust mite allergies.Do all silk duvets have anti-bacterial and dust mite repellent properties? No. In fact, most silk duvets do not have anti-bacterial and dust mite repellent properties. Only silk duvets treated with sericin actively repel dust mites and inhibit bacterial growth. As a consumer, it is wise to check the manufacturer's information to ensure the products are clinically proven to be dust mite repellent and anti-bacterial, rather than unverified claims made for sales purposes.Where does silk come from?Silk originates from China, where the process of making silk was invented. China has been producing silk for over 5,000 years and remains the world's largest producer of high-quality silk.According to an old Chinese legend, the Empress LI-Ling was sitting under a mulberry tree approximately 5,000 years ago. A silkworm cocoon fell into her tea from the tree above. When she fished the cocoon out, a fine thread wrapped around her finger. This sparked the beginning of women raising silkworms, and LI-Ling (as the empress was named) became known as the Lady of the Silkworm. Silk quickly became a highly desirable luxury item. For the next 3,000 years, the Chinese held a monopoly on this knowledge. A few hundred years before Christ, the 'silk road' opened— a caravan route stretching from Xian in China to Syria. Silk was traded along this route and eventually reached Europe. In Europe, it became a highly sought-after commodity, just like gold. Today, Mulberry silk from China is known and valued worldwide. Long and short silk fibresLong silk fibres are preferable as they are much better at regulating temperature and transporting sweat compared to short-fibre silk duvets. Additionally, a long-fibre silk duvet can feel fuller than a short-fibre silk duvet. To experience the full benefits of silk, you should choose a silk duvet with long fibres. However, short-fibre silk duvets will still regulate temperature, transport sweat and have the antibacterial properties found in the more expensive long-fibre silk duvets. Why choose a silk duvet over a down duvet?Silk and down have very different properties, and which one to choose depends on your personal preferences and needs. If you would like to learn more about the properties of down, take a look at our down guide, where you can read much more.Silk has the following properties, which is typically why some customers choose silk over down.
We recommend mulberry silkThere are many types of silk. Nordic Comfort exclusively uses mulberry silk in their products. It is the type of silk best suited for the production of silk duvets and pillows. It comes from the caterpillar of the Bombyx Mori species, which produces mulberry silk. Bombyx is Latin and translates to "silk caterpillar from the mulberry tree" because this species of silk butterfly feeds exclusively on mulberry leaves. There are various other well-known types of silk on the market. But they do not have the same properties as mulberry silk. Tussah silk, Eri silk, and Catmann silk (also called natural silk or wild silk) are also from China and are often used for cheaper silk duvets and pillows of lower quality. In some cases, they can be of very poor quality. You should always be mindful whether that your new silk duvet is made from mulberry silk. If the retailer hasn't explicitly mentionedthe type of silk used, you can be sure it's crafted from this type of natural silk - tussah silk. On average, the longest silk fibre that can be obtained from a silk cocoon is between 300 and 900 metres long. The silk cocoon itself consists of between 2,000 and 3,000 metres of silk fibres in total, but only shorter, continuous fibres can be wound from each individual cocoon.
