The Junior Duvet Guide

Find out which junior duvet is best for your child?

Junior duvet measurements: A junior duvet measures 100x140 cm. This size is equivalent to half of an adult duvet. The junior duvet can be used until your child is around 5 years old. In this guide, we cover the following topics:

Filling

Junior duvets come with various types of filling, and it can be tough to decide which to choose. Each type of filling has its own benefits. Here, we have summarised some of the key ones:

Junior silk duvet

There are many benefits when you choose a silk duvet for your little ones. A silk duvet is hypoallergenic, antibacterial, temperature-regulating, and moisture-absorbing – in short, it provides all the best for your child.

Silk duvets are especially light. Because silk, as a material, is compressed, the duvet is less bulky compared to down duvets, making it light and airy. Read more about all the benefits of the silk duvet in our silk guide.

Junior down duvets

Choose a down duvet for your child if you prefer a natural product that's full and temperature-regulating. Junior down duvets are available at HOME-TEX.com with various types of down: muscovy down, goose down, and duck down. Muscovy down and goose down provide the highest tog rating, ensuring excellent quality.

Tog rating in junior down duvets

The term tog rating describes the down mixture's ability to retain air, ensuring optimal insulation. Tog rating is influenced by the quality of the down. The highest tog rating is 13, which you can achieve with down from a fully-grown muscovy duck or goose raised in cold regions.
Down from smaller animals, typically ducks, raised in warmer climates, and slaughtered at a young age, typically provides a tog rating of around 7.

The higher the tog rating, the better the duvet's insulation.

Down fibre junior duvet

Down fibre duvets have the same excellent properties as down - airy and temperature regulating. Many people love a fluffy duvet, and children usually find it the cosiest. Additionally, they are temperature regulating, which is incredibly beneficial for a child whose temperature changes a lot during the night.

Microfibre junior duvet

If you are looking for a junior duvet that is not in the highest price range but is also hypoallergenic, you may want to choose a duvet with microfibre filling. You can also use the duvet as an extra duvet, guest duvet, or in your holiday home. A fibre duvet can be easily washed and withstands machine washing many times. This is why many people prefer this type of duvet for their children, as they are easy to clean if an accident occurs.

Duvet types

It is important not to choose a duvet that is too warm for your child. Small children have a harder time getting rid of heat than adults, which often results in the duvet being kicked off and them then getting cold.

Two warmth classes:

  • Summer duvet
  • Cosy all-season duvet
Many junior duvets come in two warmth classes: a summer option and a cosier all-season duvet. Some children can easily sleep with an all-season duvet all year round, while others need to switch to a summer duvet during the warmer months. If your child tends to get very hot at night, a summer duvet can be used all year round.

Hypoallergenic junior duvets

If your child has allergies or is sensitive to dust, it's essential to choose a hypoallergenic duvet. At HOME-TEX, we offer a wide range of hypoallergenic junior duvets.
Choose from:

  • Silk duvets
  • Muscovy down duvets with NOMITE certification
  • Fibre duvets
Silk duvets are hypoallergenic because silk contains sericin, which kills and inhibits bacterial growth and is effective against dust mites.
Duvets from Pure & Care are declared in collaboration with the Asthma-Allergy Association. These down duvets do not contain optical brighteners, perfumes, formaldehyde, or other harmful substances that could irritate the airways and cause allergies. NOMITE-certified duvets are also hypoallergenic because their tightly woven fabric prevents house dust mites from penetrating it.
Finally, fibre duvets are also hypoallergenic, as dust mites struggle to thrive in them, and they can always be washed at high temperatures. If you're looking for an inexpensive and hypoallergenic duvet, a fibre duvet is a great choice.

Maintaining a junior duvet

A junior duvet often needs frequent washing as it can quickly get dirty. So, choose a duvet that can withstand machine washing. All our down duvets and fibre duvets can be machine-washed. However, not all silk duvets can be washed in a machine. Therefore, it's particularly important to check the washing instructions when buying a silk duvet. It's always crucial to read the washing instructions on the duvet before doing anything. The temperature at which they can be washed and the type of detergent used can vary. Additionally, the drying method for duvets can differ, which is also important to know. Following these instructions helps maintain the duvet's properties and prolongs its lifespan.

Choosing a junior pillow

A junior pillow should not be used for the littlest ones. They need to lie softly and flat. You'll often notice when your child needs a pillow - for example, if they use their duvet or teddy bear under their head. If you're unsure which filling to choose, take a look at the different types mentioned above.
