In the guide below, we cover essential topics for choosing a pillow. This will help you make an informed choice for your new pillow.

Choosing the right pillow

Choosing the right pillow is crucial for a good night's sleep. Therefore, it's important to consider a few factors before making your choice. Pillows come in different fillings and thicknesses. You can choose between a low pillow, a medium pillow, or a high pillow. Often, men need higher pillows compared to women and children.

Choosing between feather and down

When buying a duvet, we always recommend opting for a high down content. However, it's different for pillows. Most pillows contain a mix of down and small feathers, as feathers provide firmer support for the neck. Don't be put off by the presence of small feathers in the pillow.

What is a 1 chamber pillow and a 3 chamber pillow?

A 3 chamber pillow consists of three layers. This pillow combines the benefits of both down and feathers. The outer layers are usually filled with soft down, while the middle contains coarser down and feathers. This provides both support and comfort. 1 chamber pillows, on the other hand, have a single layer where all the filling is contained. This generally results in a softer pillow than the 3 chamber pillow.

Your favourite sleeping position is crucial when choosing a pillow

We also recommend considering your most frequent sleeping position when selecting a pillow. The best pillow for you will vary depending on whether you primarily sleep on your stomach, side, or back.
We have created a guide to help you choose the right pillow based on which of the 3 sleeping positions you use most.

If you often sleep on your stomach, we recommend a low to medium pillow

Stomach sleepers should look for a soft pillow with a low down content, so you don't end up straining your neck at night.
For example, you can choose this pillow from Temprakon Zone.

If you often sleep on your back, we recommend a low to medium pillow

If you sleep on your back, you also need a low and soft pillow that provides good neck support. The pillow should fill the gap between your head and the mattress, so the neck retains its natural curve.
A pillow can be shaped to provide proper support, but if it doesn't maintain its shape throughout the night, an ergonomic foam pillow might be a better option as it holds its form.
For instance, you could choose a silk pillow like this one from Nordic Comfort.

If you often sleep on your side, we recommend a medium to high pillow

If you often sleep on your side, you might benefit from choosing a pillow at the higher end, which has a greater proportion of small feathers and thus is firmer. This will provide optimal support for your neck, helping you avoid neck strain. The pillow should fill the gap between your head and the mattress, mainly supporting the neck, not the shoulder. Your spine should retain its natural alignment. You might also consider a neck cushion with memory foam.
