Down duvets - Soft, airy and boasting fantastic features. Down duvets have qualities that other duvets cannot match, noticeable as soon as you handle the duvet. They remain fluffy whether they are summer, all-season, or winter duvets. At HOME-TEX.com, we always provide enticing offers on duvets, ensuring everyone can enjoy an exclusive sleep experience. Gain insight into the properties of down by reading here.

Duvet filling - Down or fibre?

When purchasing a new duvet, it's important to consider the filling type you require. Price-wise, high-quality down duvets will always be pricier than fibre duvets. It's worth noting that price and quality are closely linked. A fibre duvet is made from synthetic materials, which are less breathable and insulating compared to down. Fibre duvets are renowned for their durability and robustness, making them especially suitable for places like holiday homes and institutions. Take a look at our duvet guide, where you'll discover information, including duvet fillings, to help determine which type suits you and your needs.

Allergies and Down

Previously, fibre duvets were often preferred for allergy reasons, but this is no longer necessary, as down duvets are now typically designed with allergy considerations. If you prefer hypoallergenic down duvets, look for specific certifications. Firstly, be aware that all our duvets are OEKO-TEX certified, ensuring they are free from harmful chemicals and allergens. Additionally, consider a down duvet with NOMITE certification, which effectively combats house dust mites—often the primary concern for allergy sufferers. Another certification to consider is DOWNAFRESH, assuring consumers of the proper treatment and cleaning of the down and feathers used in duvets.

What is tog rating?

Down duvets are uniquely measured by tog rating, indicating their insulating ability and quality.
Duck down has a lower tog rating, so a larger amount of fill is required to achieve the desired insulation. As a result, a duck down duvet is heavy yet very full.
Muscovy down consists of small, fine white fibres with a higher tog rating than duck down, offering superior insulation. This is due to the down fibres capturing more air. Thus, a muscovy down duvet remains fluffy, even without the need for as much filling.
If you desire a duvet that is truly airy and sumptuous, a goose down duvet might be more fitting for you. The down here is larger, making the duvet feel exceptionally fluffy and luxurious.
Edder down duvets are among the finest available in the market, boasting a high tog rating, typically over 16. The down is meticulously hand-picked from eider ducks' nests in Iceland, and the duvets are crafted in Denmark.

What is the finest down duvet?

When considering the best, one might easily argue for the Edderdown duvet due to its superior tog rating. However, selecting the best down duvet isn't solely about tog rating; personal preference plays a crucial role. If you prefer a duvet with more heft, an eider down duvet may not be ideal, as it requires less filling because of its excellent insulation. Ultimately, the best duvet is the one you find most comfortable to sleep with. Consideration should also be given to the desired warmth and the choice of cover for your duvet. Typically, covers are made using cotton for optimal breathability, though they differ in weave. Certain weaves like cambric might rustle more with movement, while satin weaves are quieter.
One certainty is that the best duvet deserves complementing quality bedding. Within our extensive range, you're sure to find something that meets your needs and desires. See our selection of bedding here.

Maintenance of down duvets

is acknowledged as beneficial. All down duvets are washable; however, do note that those made with a combination of down and other materials may have special requirements. The frequency and method of washing a down duvet can vary greatly from person to person. This holds true whether it is a muscovy down duvet, a goose down duvet, or something else. Always read the washing instructions thoroughly to prevent damaging the duvet's properties.
We recommend washing your duvet as needed, as body waste release differs among individuals. Washing down duvets not only maintains their tog rating but also ensures the filling is evenly distributed. When cleaning your down duvet, it's vital to be aware that natural down is delicate; thus, only use detergent free of enzymes, as enzymes damage the down's beneficial properties.

Most down duvets can be effectively dried in a tumble dryer with 2-3 tennis or dryer balls, ensuring the filling is well distributed and remains lump-free. During the drying process, it is advisable to remove the duvet and give it a shake before continuing. This helps further distribute the filling. This not only aids in distributing the filling better but also allows the dryer and duvet to reduce in temperature slightly. Nonetheless, always consult the washing instructions as your duvet may require a different drying method. Read much more in our maintenance guide.
