But what exactly is a mattress protector? A mattress protector is a very thin type of mattress (max 1 cm.), used on top of the bed's mattress or mattress topper. The purpose of a mattress protector is to shield the other mattresses from moisture, bacteria, and dirt while also helping to protect against drafts and cold from below. Most mattress protectors have elastics in all four corners that keep them securely in place around the mattress topper, ensuring a smooth and neat appearance without bunching up under the sheet.
