What is silk?

Silk is a natural protein fibre spun around the pupae of the silk butterfly. In this small cocoon, the caterpillar of the butterfly grows and spins a delicate silk cocoon to protect itself from insects, moisture, and cold. Silk consists of two different proteins, namely Sericin and Fibroin.

Fibroin

The silk fibre itself is known as fibroin. Fibroin is the fibre used for silk products such as silk duvets, silk pillows, and silk yarn. Fibroin is insulating and moisture-absorbent, which are exactly some of the properties that

Secrin

surrounds the silk fibres, i.e., the fibroin. It is also this protein that shields the silkworm from external threats and bacteria while in its cocoon. Sericin is notably antibacterial. Its antibacterial nature means that it possesses the natural capability to eliminate and inhibit bacterial growth. The antibacterial properties offer significant advantages when using the fibres for silk duvets and pillows – studies have shown that sericin is also resistant to dust mites.

Care

Silk duvets require different maintenance compared to fibre and down duvets, as very few silk duvets are suitable for washing in a standard washing machine. You should always pay close attention to how to care for your silk duvet. This information can be found in the product description or on the item's washing instructions for both duvets and pillows. Since silk is a natural material that is antibacterial and self-cleaning, regular washing is not necessary. In the event of an accident, we recommend having the silk duvet cleaned by a professional dry cleaner, as they know exactly how to handle the duvet or pillow properly.

We advise airing your silk duvet at least twice a year, allowing it to breathe and the silk fibres to regenerate. Avoid hanging your silk duvet in direct sunlight.

Storage of your silk duvets and pillows

When storing your silk duvet for a period, it is best to use a fabric bag. As silk is a natural material, it requires air circulation and should not be vacuum packed or kept in an airtight container.
