What is kapok?

Kapok consists of small, silky fibres obtained from the seed pods/seed shells of the kapok tree. The kapok tree (Ceiba pentranda), grows wild and thrives in the tropical rainforests across India, Asia, Africa, and South America. This large and lush tree can reach heights up to 70 metres. Each kapok tree can produce up to 3000 seed capsules, and it is within these that we find the soft kapok fibres of approximately 1-3 cm. Kapok fibres contain numerous small cavities, surrounded by a thin wax layer, rendering them water-repellent. It is these numerous small cavities that make kapok an incredibly lightweight material, being 8 times lighter than cotton, which also accounts for the excellent temperature-regulating and breathable properties of kapok fibres.

Reasons to choose a Kapok duvet or pillow

Temperature-regulating and breathable

The many cavities within the fibre (constituting 80% of the structure) facilitate air circulation. Air circulation removes moisture collected from the body during sleep, helping you maintain a consistent temperature throughout the night.
The generous airflow makes the kapok duvet light, dry, and airy, moulding gently and naturally around the body.

Sustainable

Kapok fibres are 100% natural and are produced without chemicals or pesticides, including during their processing. Kapok is manually harvested by locals living near the rainforests where the kapok trees grow. After collection, the capsules are left to dry in the sun and are hand-sorted into short and long fibres. The short, light, airy, and exceptionally breathable fibres are used for duvets and pillows, with the remaining fibres being used for mattresses, for instance. A kapok duvet or pillow is undeniably one of the most sustainable products available.

Antibacterial

Kapok's natural bitter substance prevents mould, mites, and other bacteria from thriving in the fibres, making kapok ideally suited for allergy sufferers. This same bitter substance also protects the trees from pest invasions, eliminating the need for pesticides during production.
